Product Description
The BYOC 5 knob compressor is essentially a Ross Gray Compressor clone with the added "attack" knob mod, but the BYOC 5 Knob compressor takes the Ross clone to a whole new level. It has the Blend and Tone knobs as well. The tone knob is unlike other tone knobs because it takes advantage of a pre-existing high-pass filter in the Ross circuit and makes it variable. So because it is a part of the circuit that was always there, it allows you to maintain the characteristics that made the circuit a classic, while at the same time allowing you to add some jangle to your tone and better match the pedal to single coils or humbuckers.
The Blend knob allows you to adjust the ratio of compressed signal to dry signal. The Blend circuit is an original BYOC design that is transistor based rather than the typical IC based blend circuit so that it keeps to the theme and tone of the original circuit.
It is completely transparent and does not "correct" the signal phase which is important for maintaining the sound of the original and keeping it from becoming too sterile. It also adds a massive amount of volume boost that you probably won't find on any other compressor. But the added knobs are just the surface of what sets the BYOC compressor apart from other compressors. What's on the inside will surely delight compressor fans as well as the more avid stompbox builders.
We've added "universal transistor sockets" to the PCB so that it can accept any type of TO-92 package transistor regardless of the pinout. This means you can use the traditional NOS Toshiba 2SC1849 transistor or the 2N5088 without having to do any confusing lead bending. The kit comes with sets of both types of transistor by the way.
We've also bent the circuit so that it can accept the BA6110 chip which was designed specifically to replace the traditional CA3080 chip. The BA6110 is now obsolete too, but it was claimed to be more sensitive and have less distortion than the CA3080. This means longer sustain, more squish, and more transparent tone. But you can be the judge...The kit comes with both the BA6110 and CA3080 and sockets so interchanging between the two is a simple matter of swapping one chip for the other.
One of the most common requests we'd get regarding changes to the old compressor kit was to use "audiophile quality" components regardless of whether it made a sonic difference or not. All of these new features are topped off with the finest components you can possibly use. 1% metal film resistors; all WIMA metal film capacitors, silver mica capacitors, and tantalum capacitors are used in the signal path; Sprague aluminum electrolytic capacitors used for power filtering; double sided Silver plated PCB.
